UTGSU Governance

As a large organization focused on Member engagement, the UTGSU has a comprehensive governing structure as set out in our organizational Bylaws. Learn more about how the governance structure works at About.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is composed of the Directors and Executive Officers elected by the Members. The Board is responsible for setting the goals and priorities of the Union, formulating UTGSU policy, approving the UTGSU budget and receiving reports and information from other campus groups.

Assembly

The UTGSU Assembly is a forum for Course Unions to discuss University and UTGSU affairs. Each Course Union has between 1 and 4 Representatives, depending on the size of their Membership. The Course Union Representatives form the Assembly, which can propose motions for consideration at a Board of Directors meeting.

Annual General Meeting

A General Meeting is the UTGSU’s highest decision-making body where every Member gets to vote on important matters, such as approving an audit, changes to the Bylaws and the adoption of resolutions served with notice.

Finances

The UTGSU Board of Directors approves an operational budget every year in the Fall Term. Additionally, the UTGSU conducts a third-party audit every year which is submitted to the Annual General Meeting for approval. Board of Appeal

The Board of Appeal (BoA) may investigate any decisions made by the UTGSU Chair, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Elections and Referenda Committee, the Chief and Deputy Returning Officers, and the UTGSU Course Unions. Through these investigations, the BoA may rule on final appeals regarding elections, referenda, decision-making processes defined in the bylaw and policies, issues of conflict of interest and penalty, and concerns regarding the operations of any UTGSU body.

Equity-related Concerns & Disputes

The Equity Officer is responsible for intaking complaints or disputes regarding racism, transphobia, sexism, homophobia, and other charges that violate the UTGSU’s equity statement. They may facilitate an informal resolution process or assist in the navigation of a formal process. The Equity Officer is also responsible for enforcing the UTGSU’s equity statement in General Meetings, and ensuring that the UTGSU’s policies and procedures are aligned with the tenets of the statement.
