Working at the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a professional, diverse and innovative community at the UTGSU. As the students’ union we work to advocate for students, build a strong campus community, and provide cost-saving services. We hire students for part-time roles throughout the entire year. We also at times are seeking professionals to join our team in one of our full-time roles.

Note: The UTGSU is independently incorporated and autonomous from the University of Toronto.

The Equity Officer of the Board of Directors facilitates the application and follow-through of the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union (UTGSU) equity statement. 

Job Duties:

  • The Equity Officer shall be responsible for the intake of non-human resource complaints or disputes related to racism, transphobia, sexism, homophobia, and other charges that violate the UTGSU’s Equity Statement, and navigating informal or formal dispute resolution avenues to address such issues.
  • The Equity Officer shall facilitate the Equity Response Protocol and provide insight and feedback to other equity, dispute and adjudication-related policies and frameworks implemented by the UTGSU.
  • The Equity Officer shall assist the Chair of the Board of Directors in the facilitation of General Meetings with formal and informal mechanisms for dispute resolution and enforcing the UTGSU’s Equity Statement. 
  • The Equity Officer shall assist the Board of Directors in the identification and development of equity and anti-oppression policies, procedures and frameworks. The Equity Officer shall be assisted with organizational resources in the development of these tools.
  • The Equity Officer shall assist in the development, facilitation and/or sourcing of equity and anti-oppression training for the Board of Directors, including identifying additional opportunities for training and education.
  • As requested, the Equity Officer shall assist in dispute resolution within the UTGSU or any of its affiliated entities, including Course Unions, Caucuses and Committees. 
  • The Equity Officer shall make recommendations on the role of the Equity Officer in the UTGSU, and shall prepare a handbook and transition report at the end of term.

Relevant Qualifications:

  • Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Previous demonstrated experience in equity-related academia, programming, organizing, training and non-profit or community spaces is an asset.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to creating accessible spaces that prioritize membership growth and commitments to anti-oppression, de-escalation and conflict mediation. Previous demonstrated experience in facilitation and mediation for non-profit or community spaces is an asset.
  • To ensure the perception and actuality of impartiality, candidates should not have prior active engagement with UTGSU governance, including but not limited to: sitting on the Board of Directors, using dispute resolution and appeals process of the UTGSU, or be an active public participant in UTGSU governance. However, attendance and participation in UTGSU General Meetings and events will not be deemed as ineligibility criteria. 

The Equity Officer of the Board of Directors will be appointed at the UTGSU Board of Directors meeting and must not be currently serving on the Board of Directors, the Elections and Referendum Committee, Board of Appeal or as the Chair of the Board of Directors or Chief Returning Officer.

The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union (UTGSU) is seeking candidates to fill five (5) vacancies in the Board of Directors Division One: Humanities. 

The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance and management of the students’ union, including participating in monthly Board of Directors meetings and committee meetings, conducting outreach and membership engagement, and advancing the mandate and strategic goals of the students’ union. Interim appointments will not be eligible to serve motions or vote at Board of Directors Meetings, but will be entitled to speaking rights. Interim Board Members will be eligible to sit in the various committees, attend meetings and actively participate in advancing the work of the students’ union.

Information on the UTGSU can be found in the students’ union Bylaws (specifically Bylaw Four: Board of Directors) and Policies (specifically Governing Policy 10: Director’s Duties).

Please note that the UTGSU is seeking to fill current vacancies on the Board of Directors with candidates who are best suited to the required and preferred eligibility criteria. Therefore, the Nominating Committee and Board of Directors may choose to not fill all vacant positions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in one of the Graduate Programs listed above
  • Commitment to the principles of the students’ union, including but not limited to, a commitment to students’ union autonomy, rights to organize and membership engagement
  • Commitment to principles of equity and anti-oppressive practices
  • Relevant experience and interest in at least one of the UTGSU standing committees, campaigns, or initiatives including Base Funding, Masters Funding, Food Security, Graduate Student Housing, Mental Health, Campaigns & Advocacy, Finance, Governance, and University Affairs. Details about the committees can be found in the students’ union Bylaws (Bylaws 6)  and Policies (Policy G4).
  • Sign a Consent to Act, maintain confidentiality when required and practice a fiduciary duty
  • Be a Member of the UTGSU in the 2025-26 academic year, with the intention of being a Member for the 2026-27 academic year
  • Meet Board of Director eligibility requirements as per Bylaw 4.2 (excluding 4.2.2.3.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience engaging with your faculty, department or campus outside of your individual academic journey
  • Expressed interest in promoting and advancing UTGSU campaigns, events and services
  • Relevant experience in stewardship or governance processes, such as being involved in student groups, course unions, students’ unions and/or non-profits
  • Availability for Board of Director Meetings which are typically held on weekday evenings once per month via hybrid in-person and Zoom options.

The staff will also assist as support staff for UTGSU events, outreach and program planning as needed, including the UTGSU Gradfest on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Job Duties

General tasks in this role include:

  1. Strategic and administrative support for the executive portfolio to ensure effective representation, accountability and advancement of UTGSU member’s issues.
  2. Assistance with committee and working group support including agenda building, minute-taking, task management and other responsibilities as they arise.
  3. Coordination of project-based research, including data collection, analysis, preparing reports, contacting stakeholders, etc.
  4. Preparing and facilitating reports, presentations, proposals, budgets and other documentation for different stakeholders, specifically the Board of Directors and General Meetings.
  5. Assistance with coalition building, government relations, stakeholder relationship, including coordinating meetings, agendas, tasklists and follow-up.
  6. Assistance with membership engagement and outreach, including supporting membership townhalls, creating and reviewing member surveys, coordinating flyer & poster distribution, and conducting campus-wide and department-level tabling and outreach.
  7. Assistance with communication-based and material development tasks including content creation for print media, social media, email digests and media releases.
  8. Assistance in other tasks as they arise and are reasonably assigned by the Executive Director.

President (Bylaw 7.8)

The President serves as the primary spokesperson and leader of the UTGSU, setting the tone and direction for the organization. They oversee the UTGSU’s vision and ensure that the executive team and staff have the resources needed to bring that vision to life. The President works to enhance the overall graduate experience, fostering a supportive academic environment and representing student interests across the university to the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice-Provost Students. The President will also be tasked with the implementation of the new food security levy and resource system. 

The Associate President would be a staff resource to the departmental students’ associations outreach and meetings as well as campaigns and initiatives led by the President.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A current student at the University of Toronto with preference given to current UTGSU members or future UTGSU members who have accepted letters of offer to start in Fall 2026.
  • Dedication to the mandate and goals of the UTGSU and broader students’ movement, including knowledge and comprehension of equity & anti-oppressive practice.
  • Proven capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills, including the capacity to actively translate direction & feedback into tangible & trackable proposals and timelines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Relevant experience, knowledge and applicable skills based on one or more of the special projects.

Vice-President Academic (Bylaw 7.9)

The Associate to the Vice-President Academics supports key initiatives related to academic advocacy, student support, and funding. This includes contributing to the Student Supervisor and Mentorship Campaign, aimed at improving supervision quality, strengthening mentorship structures, and enhancing the graduate student experience. The role involves coordinating projects, conducting research, assisting with communications, and helping implement programs that support graduate students across the university.

The Associate Vice-President would be a staff resource to the University Affairs Committee as well as campaigns and initiatives led by the VP. 

Qualifications

Vice-President External (Bylaw 7.10)

The Vice-President External serves as the UTGSU’s key liaison with external organizations and groups, and advocates for student interests in various forums. By connecting the union and its members to other student and community groups and maintaining strong relationships with external partners, the VP External aims to strengthen advocacy initiatives to enhance the graduate student experience. The VP External bridges the gap between graduate students and resources outside the union, with the broader goals of providing information on external resources available to members and improving member access to these resources. The VP External will be responsible for coordinating transit advocacy and preparing for the 2026 municipal elections.

The Associate Vice-President would be a staff resource to the Campaigns & Advocacy Committee as well as campaigns and initiatives led by the VP.

Fraud and Scam Alerts

Unfortunately, it is common for fraud and scam emails to be received to your University of Toronto email relating to job offers at the UTGSU or the University of Toronto. This may look like receiving an email stating that you have been offered a flexible work opportunity or indicating that you can apply for a job, while asking for personal details such as your date of birth and Whatsapp Number. They may also ask you to click links to apply. Unfortunately, these emails can sometimes come from compromised toronto.ca accounts.
