Working at the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a professional, diverse and innovative community at the UTGSU. As the students’ union we work to advocate for students, build a strong campus community, and provide cost-saving services. We hire students for part-time roles throughout the entire year. We also at times are seeking professionals to join our team in one of our full-time roles.

Note: The UTGSU is independently incorporated and autonomous from the University of Toronto.

Current Opportunities

About the Role

The UTGSU is recruiting four (4) student members to sit on the UTGSU Food Security Levy Fund Committee, a standing committee of the Board of Directors responsible for governing a dedicated fund supporting graduate student food security.

What the Committee Does

  • Sets strategic direction and oversees operations of the Food Security Levy Fund
  • Develops and reviews the annual fund budget
  • Reports to the Board in August, December, and April each session
  • Allocates funding (~$200,000 annually) across programs, partnerships, application-based projects, and capital investments

Who Can Apply

The opportunity is open to all University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union members who will be enrolled in the 2026-27 academic year. The opportunity is open to students from all UofT campuses.

Commitment

At most, there will be two committee meetings per month during the onboarding and application periods. The regular commitment following onboarding will look like monthly committee meetings. Committee members should also anticipate time to review documents and prepare for committee meetings. Additional time may be committed to participate in outreach of the Food Security Levy at Orientation and stakeholder meetings, but is not required. 

All members must declare actual or perceived conflicts of interest per UTGSU Bylaw 13. For further clarity, students seeking funding for their own projects must remove themselves from discussions and decisions relating to their own projects.

The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union (UTGSU) is seeking to hire a Chief Returning Officer for the UTGSU By-Elections and General for Executive Officers and Board of Directors, as well as scheduled referendums in the 2026-27 governance year. The CRO is responsible for the administration of the overall election and referenda process.

  • Start Date: August 20, 2026

  • Flatrate Honorarium: 
    • $500.00 Honorarium for By-Elections (20 hours)
    • $500.00 for Referenda (20 hours, if held)
    • $1,000.00 for General Elections (40 hours)
    • Honorariums are calculated based on projected hours at $25.00/hour

Strong organizational and time management skills are required. Previous experience working with policy, previous experience administering or working on elections/referenda, knowledge of students’ union governance structures, and commitment to upholding principles of equity and anti-oppression are an asset. 

The CRO position will require up to 20 hours of commitment for small scale elections and referenda in the Fall Term and up to 40 hours for General Elections for the Winter Term. During an active election period the CRO may be required to work up to 5-10 hours per week, however, exact working hours are flexible as determined by the Elections and Referenda Committee. Approval of additional hours are compensated at $25.00/hour. 

Duties

The CRO’s duties include:

  • In conjunction with the Elections and Referenda Committee, oversee the general operations and administration of the elections and referenda;
  • Be the point of contact for Members, candidates and campaign teams regarding an election or referenda;
  • Distributing candidate/referenda information packages and providing election training;
  • Verifying the eligibility of all nominated candidates;
  • Reviewing and approving campaign materials;
  • Overseeing the voting platform; 
  • Issuing demerit points and sanctions that may be imposed on candidates/campaigns; and
  • Compiling an Elections & Referenda Report.

Please note that the CRO may not be a Board of Directors member, a Caucus or Committee chair, a Board of Appeal member, or a UTGSU staff member.

The CRO will be ineligible to run in the election, due to the nature of their role. Preference will be given to Members of the UTGSU, but all experienced candidates are welcome to apply.

The staff will also assist as support staff for UTGSU events, outreach and program planning as needed, including the UTGSU Gradfest on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Job Duties

General tasks in this role include:

  1. Strategic and administrative support for the executive portfolio to ensure effective representation, accountability and advancement of UTGSU member’s issues.
  2. Assistance with committee and working group support including agenda building, minute-taking, task management and other responsibilities as they arise.
  3. Coordination of project-based research, including data collection, analysis, preparing reports, contacting stakeholders, etc.
  4. Preparing and facilitating reports, presentations, proposals, budgets and other documentation for different stakeholders, specifically the Board of Directors and General Meetings.
  5. Assistance with coalition building, government relations, stakeholder relationship, including coordinating meetings, agendas, tasklists and follow-up.
  6. Assistance with membership engagement and outreach, including supporting membership townhalls, creating and reviewing member surveys, coordinating flyer & poster distribution, and conducting campus-wide and department-level tabling and outreach.
  7. Assistance with communication-based and material development tasks including content creation for print media, social media, email digests and media releases.
  8. Assistance in other tasks as they arise and are reasonably assigned by the Executive Director.

President (Bylaw 7.8)

The President serves as the primary spokesperson and leader of the UTGSU, setting the tone and direction for the organization. They oversee the UTGSU’s vision and ensure that the executive team and staff have the resources needed to bring that vision to life. The President works to enhance the overall graduate experience, fostering a supportive academic environment and representing student interests across the university to the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice-Provost Students. The President will also be tasked with the implementation of the new food security levy and resource system. 

The Associate President would be a staff resource to the departmental students’ associations outreach and meetings as well as campaigns and initiatives led by the President.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A current student at the University of Toronto with preference given to current UTGSU members or future UTGSU members who have accepted letters of offer to start in Fall 2026.
  • Dedication to the mandate and goals of the UTGSU and broader students’ movement, including knowledge and comprehension of equity & anti-oppressive practice.

Vice-President Finance (Bylaw 7.11) 

The Vice-President Finance serves as the UTGSU’s Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the union’s financial management and operations. They work closely with various committees and the executive team to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparent decision-making. The VP Finance manages the budget, supervises financial services for students, and plays a crucial role in strategic planning. By balancing financial oversight with service delivery, they help maintain the UTGSU’s financial health while supporting initiatives that benefit graduate students. 

Student-Supervisor Relationship Campaign: The Vice-President Finance works closely with the Vice-President Academics in developing the Student Supervisor Relations campaign and developing a Peer Support service. This will include assisting with creating an advocacy handbook, promoting advocacy services and data collection and analysis of student-supervisor relations issues.

Student Group Support & Grant: The Vice-President Finance is seeking a candidate which will assist in administrative tasks of reviewing student group status applications and grant applications. This will include coordinating intake, reviewing data and preparing presentations for the relevant committees. 

Committee Support: The Vice-President Finance is seeking a candidate which will assist in the development of Finance Committee agendas, minutes and presentations, including confirming attendance of committee members.

Vice-President Graduate Life (Bylaw 7.12)

The Vice-President Graduate Life serves as the lead organizer of UTGSU events & programming, volunteer engagement and mental health programming and advocacy. This VP is responsible for the organization of the fall and winter Orientation events, as well as the regular programming hosted in the UTGSU Building throughout the year. Beyond internal programming, the VP Graduate Life collaborates closely with organizations such as GradLife, Hart House, the Multi-Faith Centre, and the Centre for International Experience (CIE), helping to ensure graduate students have access to inclusive, meaningful, and accessible resources. 

Orientation Support: The Vice-President Graduate Life is seeking a candidate to help plan UTGSU’s large-scale events for Orientation and Winter Orientation. This will include working with UTGSU’s staff team and taking on specific project elements of programming and orientation leader coordination.

Event Planning & Facilitation: The Vice-President Graduate Life is seeking a candidate to help plan and facilitate events that the UTGSU hosts. This will include leading event coordination and working with the Board of Directors, volunteers and staff to plan and facilitate a number of ongoing and standalone events such as trivia, karaoke, crafts, board games, discussion groups, wellness fairs, 5 Buck Lunches, vaccine clinics and much more. 

Committee Support: The Vice-President Graduate Life is seeking a candidate which will assist in the development of Programming Committee agendas, minutes and presentations, including confirming attendance of committee members, and inviting new volunteers to planning meetings.

Vice-President Internal (Bylaw 7.13)

The Vice-President Internal manages the internal operations and governance structure of the UTGSU. They organize and prepare Board of Directors meetings, chair the Governance Committee, maintain essential organizational records, and ensure that Bylaws and Policies are up-to-date and properly implemented. Additionally, they take on special projects to enhance internal processes and member engagement. 

Housing Campaign & Advocacy: The Vice-President Internal is seeking a candidate to support the development of housing advocacy resources and coordinating with relevant stakeholders. This will include developing resources and educational materials, coordinating with campus residence/tenants groups, and working with advocacy partners to achieve housing goals.

Record Keeping: The Vice-President Internal is seeking a candidate which will assist in maintaining digital records of the UTGSU. This will include cleaning up the current Google Drive folders, assisting full-time staff in collecting and standardizing minutes, and uploading governance records for Members.

Committee Support: The Vice-President Internal is seeking a candidate which will assist in the development of Internal Committee agendas, minutes and presentations, including confirming attendance of committee members. This will also include creating policy briefings for the Board of Directors.

The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union (UTGSU) is seeking UofT graduate students to assist with monitoring and supporting activities in the UTGSU Building at 16 Bancroft Avenue. The staff will also assist as support staff for UTGSU events, outreach and program planning as needed, including the UTGSU Gradfest on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

This position involves physical tasks such as carrying weight up and down staircases, setting up/taking down volleyball and badminton nets, moving gym equipment and mats, walking between floors, and arranging chairs and tables. Some caretaking to maintain general cleanliness is also expected.

Job Duties

The Building & Program Lead:

  1. Coordinates the Grad Loft space, including assisting with equipment rentals, planning Grad Loft programming with internal and external partners, ensuring community guidelines are maintained, and other tasks as required.
  2. Coordinates recreational programming in the UTGSU Gym, including assisting in space bookings and equipment rentals, set up and take down (floor mats, volleyball nets, etc), planning competitions and leagues, collecting participant waiver forms, assisting in the promotion of recreation activities, and other tasks as required.
  3. Assists the UTGSU Pub Manager in facilitating activities in the UTGSU Pub, including assisting in the promotion of pub activities and advertising programming of the UTGSU at the pub. 
  4. Coordinates facilities management, supporting space bookings, ensuring general space maintenance, and communicating building rules to members.
  5. Assists with event management and coordination as required.
  6. Administers adherence to UTGSU community guidelines, including the principles of equity and inclusion, in the UTGSU Building.
  7. Assists in the promotion of UTGSU programs and services to members of the UTGSU visiting the building.
  8. Coordinates regular security walkthroughs of the UTGSU Building, assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the building (including light caretaking tasks), and makes notes for University of Toronto Facilities on caretaking needs.
  9. Evaluates and recommends policies and procedures for the UTGSU Building.
  10. As requested and available, assists with UTGSU programs outside of regular hours, such as daytime or late-night events, and at other locations on the University of Toronto’s campuses.
  11. Please note that this is a part-time seasonal position. No shifts are available during the Winter Break and other periods where the university is closed.

Role-Specific Focus Areas

Each Building & Program Lead will also take on one of the following focus roles. Please note that these roles are subsidiary to the main duties indicated above.

  1. Building Services Support: Assist in the administration of facilities bookings, preparation, and promotions, including support for the UTGSU booking portal: HelloRubric.
  2. Partnership Development: Assist in the solicitation and coordination of events, catering, and ticketed discounts for members, including planning special event outings.
  3. Student Group Support: Assist in the administration of student group recognition and service provisions, including support for the UTGSU membership portal: HelloRubric.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Capacity to work in-person at 16 Bancroft Avenue at least once or twice a week for a full shift between the hours of 4:45 pm-11:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Proven capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Due to the inaccessibility of the UTGSU Building, the capacity to move up and down staircases, and with reasonable carrying weight, is an asset.

The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union (UTGSU) is seeking a UofT graduate student who will assist the Executive Committee and Board of Directors in the development, research, implementation and evaluation of endorsed campaigns. This includes, but is not limited to, university-oriented campaigns (Student-Supervisor Relations, Base Funding, Masters Funding), government-oriented campaigns (Transit, Municipal Elections) or short-term campaigns such as the Hart House Capital Fund Referenda.

Job Duties

General tasks in this role include:

  1. Work closely with UTGSU Executives, members of the Board of Directors and Committees to develop membership-oriented campaigns using organizing frameworks, such as LabourNotes, for the development of campaign goals, strategies and tactics.
  2. Conduct research for the development and implementation of selected campaigns, including monitoring changes in university, government and political party positions, researching past practice and public policy thinktanks, and developing membership advisories and briefings.
  3. Assist with the development and revisions of issues-based policies (starting page 139) which articulate the organizational stance on a variety of political, economic and social issues. This will include conducting research, writing and editing policies, facilitating working groups and feedback forums, and creating briefing reports on final decisions.
  4. Identify, coordinate and maintain stakeholder engagement with targeted communities, collaborators and decision-makers related to the campaign’s strategy.
  5. Assist with the development, production and distribution of digital and physical campaign materials in coordination with relevant UTGSU team members. This includes developing campaign guides, assisting in website updates and the integration of campaigns in overall communication strategies with the relevant staff members.
  6. Assist with the training and coordination of volunteers to progress campaigns strategies and outcomes, and provide access to research and message boxes..
  7. Consistently conduct and facilitate internal and external evaluation and reflection on the campaigns strategies employed.
  8. Assistance in other tasks as they arise and are reasonably assigned by the Executive Director.

General tasks in this role include:

  1. Plan, develop and implement outreach and engagement strategies to engage UofT graduate students in the campaigns, events and services of the UTGSU.
  2. Plan, develop and implement trackable engagement statistics including but not limited to email listserv signups, social media follows, survey participation, flyer giveaways and activation participation.
  3. Coordinate regular indoor and outdoor tabling outreach days in high-traffic graduate spaces.
  4. Coordinate outreach at UofT and community events, fairs and outreach opportunities.
  5. Coordinate ongoing departmental outreach opportunities including, but not limited to, lounge and lab outreach breakfast/lunches, tabling opportunities and evening engagements. 
  6. Coordinate regular physical postering sessions and ensure that posters are regularly updated in public and departmental spaces. This includes maintaining a record of poster locations and available digital notice boards.
  7. Assist, when logistically feasible, in the coordination of outreach opportunities at the Scarborough, Mississauga and Aerospace campuses, as well as other offsite outreach opportunities.

Job Duties

General tasks in this role include:

  1. Work with the Communications & Engagement Specialist and the Communications Working Group to identify and produce print and digital graphic designs in a timely manner for UTGSU programming, campaigns, services and opportunities.
  2. Plan, create, edit and evaluate digital media design content such as social media content, website banners, email listserv content and other forms of digital media. This may also include converting print media to digital media specifications.
  3. Plan, create, edit and evaluate print media design content such as flyers, posters, pamphlets, training manuals, reports, research/lobby documents and other forms of print media. This may also include converting digital media to physical media specifications. This may also include coordination with selected UTGSU printers.
  4. Participate in identifying and planning graphic design projects with various team members. This will include soliciting and defining project scope and expectations from various stakeholders across the organization, and working with the Communications & Engagement Specialist on timelines and deliverables.
  5. Assist in overall copy editing of digital and print materials before, during and after the design process.
  6. Facilitate feedback and evaluation processes in reviewing projects, including reviewing project deliverables, available success metrics and recommending internal processes and strategic planning for future designs.
  7. Ensure adherence to UTGSU brand guidelines, style guides and AODA standards.

  1. Ownership of content strategy: propose and pitch content ideas, oversee content production from concept through execution, and manage the editorial calendar with the Communications & Engagement Specialist by coordinating themes, posting times, and team accountability.
  2. Develop clear content plans and visual storyboards for UTGSU programming, campaigns, services, and opportunities, outlining messaging, format, platform strategy, and creative direction to support timely and consistent content production.
  3. Capture and produce engaging photo, video, and audio content for UTGSU programming, events, and campaigns, ensuring high-quality output that aligns with branding, accessibility standards, and platform requirements.
  4. Facilitate the editing process of audio, photo and video content. Facilitate reasonable feedback processes to finalize content before posting.
  5. Assist in interpreting engagement metrics, audience demographics, and posting performance to identify what resonates, then rapidly testing and iterating on content strategy weekly
  6. Facilitate the development of relevant social media posts, blog posts and spotlights on UTGSU members, including Executive, Directors, student group, volunteers and member highlights.
  7. Assist in capturing in-person live video and photo content for the UTGSU social media and digital archives for future social media postings and graphic designs. This will also include identifying opportunities for other UTGSU representatives to capture if the Associate is unavailable.
  8. Assist in the coordination of collaboration with campus and community partners to develop collaborative posts and stories, and expand reach of the UTGSU social media.
