Opting-out / Opting-in
You can only opt-out during the applicable Change-of-Coverage Period at the beginning of your first eligible session of the year.
**No exceptions will be made if the opt-out date is missed**
Opt-Out / Opt-In Deadlines (Change of Coverage Period)
Fall Start Date: September 2 – September 30, 2025
Winter Start Date: January 5 – January 30, 2026
How to Opt-out
To opt-out, you must show proof of equivalent insurance (not OHIP/UHIP). You must opt-out annually, at the beginning of the term you are first registered in. You cannot rejoin the plan after you have opted out, so check the expiry date on your insurance. Opt-outs are done online only.
How to Opt-in
To opt-in your dependents, you must opt them in annually, at the beginning of the term you are first registered in. This is an annual plan. You cannot opt-in your dependents for one semester only.
As a graduating member, you may extend your coverage for 12 consecutive months by applying for extended coverage within 30 days of termination of your UTGSU Health & Dental Plan (end of term). 50% of the family enrolment fee you paid in September will be deducted from the cost of the 12-Month Extended Insurance Plan fee that you will pay in January.
Opt-ins are done online only.
Opt-out Reimbursement
Fall Semester Opt-Out Reimbursements:
The Fall Semester opt-out refunds will be issued after the add/drop period is over. Refunds are generally sent by the end of November. You should have received an email with an application number after you opted out. That is your confirmation that you completed the opt-out successfully. If you do not receive your refund by the middle of December, please send the UTGSU an email with:
- The confirmation email you received when you opted out (which has the application number); and
- your student number
